What is Rough Cut Lumber?

Description

This figured Black Walnut wood is not to be missed!

Sometimes as we are sorting through our Black Walnut we happen across some unique and rare figure and are able to separate it from the regular stuff. We can't promise we will always have lots of this in stock - but you can be sure these boards have been selected for figure and curl on some of the board. It would be rare to have the curl appear throughout the whole plank.

Although these boards have been skipped dress to show colour and grain, they will still require some TLC and additional milling. If you would prefer to have the milling done for you - check out our S4S Curly Walnut Lumber.

What is Rough Cut Lumber?

Rough Cut Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who enjoy working with machinery or hand tools to mill their own boards.

We use this term to describe boards that require additional milling. Rough Cut Lumber have been run through the planer to show the grain however they have not been dressed. You will need to mill both faces and edges. Rough Cut Lumber are available in specific lengths with varying widths.

For example: 4/4 x 6" x 24”

You will receive a board that is just shy of an inch thick, with a width in the range of 5-6”, and is 24” long.

S4S Lumber

Who are they for? These are ideal for those who aren’t equipped with the necessary tools to flatten and straighten boards.

The term “surfaced” or "dressed" refers to a piece of wood that has been milled. To achieve the necessary dimensions, we select a larger board to work from. Both faces and edges are then surfaced so you can be assured that the board is flat and straight. These boards are available in specific sizes.

Lucky that I am a true craftsman, others would not be so lucky. Straight boards would be appreciated in the future…

Good looking wood

As last time I ordered this wood is straight and dry.

Excellent Walnut

This thick walnut was straight, true and square with sharp edges and very nice grain pattern. I bought some thins as well (walnut, paduak and maple) and all were excellent quality.

Planer left a small indent towards the end of the piece. Poor grain.

Gorgeous figuring

Beautiful pieces of wood. I finished one epoxy river charcuterie board with these pieces and can’t wait to get my hands on some more. Once oiled, the gorgeous figuring just pops! Love it!

I ordered 4 4/4 walnut boards and 3 were good, one was warped and not suitable for the use I intended

Ok, not great.

For this price - I would expect clear lumber that is mostly heartwood.
Of the 5 pieces I received more than 50% of the boards were sapwood. At least 2 of the boards had their entire face as Sapwood. Yes there is a time and a place for sapwood, but i assure you when we are buying S4S Walnut, we do NOT want sapwood.

It should also be of note that the ends of the boards had checking cracks.

I had high hopes for KJP, but I don't think I can order from them again.
