Nice Basswood

I didn’t want to give a bad review being a new customer and received a nice piece of wood. My problem was that I ordered Butternut and got Basswood. I have already milled the piece down and used it so I have no expectations. Just wanted to let you know. Next time I may get Butternut.

Butternut carving block

This is the first time carving with butternut and I really enjoy carving the butternut over the basswood. However the quality of bass would that I received is very good. I've had experience with basswood from the internet and it was a crap shoot sometimes you get good wood sometimes you get horrible wood however I inspected the nine blocks of the bass wood and they all seem to be a great quality. I look forward to carving with them, however you asked about the 2x2x6 butternut. I find that it is a much softer wood than the basswood it's much better to carve with. It's funny but I'm finding even with a Blade does not the sharpest You are still able to curve the butternut. I find it as wonderful color especially for what I carve from them which are bears caricatures and I sell them for $5 a piece. I do take commissioned work. I've had a few of those in the past year since I was starting however they weren't the bears they were of cats. The people that I made it for especially the woman, she really liked the one that I did. Without her knowing I got a hold of my best friend and he sent me pictures of the cat of all sides and directions. So I painted the cat to match the pictures. Well what about saying she was very impressed. And she's asking her husband to see if I will make another cat matching the one that she has other than the one I made. And it's made from a 2x2x6 basswood. It's going to be painted so I don't know if I'll use the butternut or stay with the basswood I'm not quite sure yet. I've had a few people see a bear that is done in the butternut and they fell in love with it and wanted to buy it. Unfortunately I keep the first one I make of every batch. Sort of like for my portfolio lolol. That's funny. Anyway I think that answers your question a little bit more information than you ask for. Thank you for reaching out and asking I'm impressed by that. I look forward to buying more product from you. However while I was on the phone I inquired about a primer sealer and I was told that you don't sell that stuff. I don't understand why it would supply place would not supply wood products such as sealers, primers, stains, shellac, varnish, and I'm sure that you should be selling also the applicators such as brushes, both hair and sponge. I'm just confused on what products you sell. It's not a big concern because I have a hardware store about 750 m for my home. However I was wondering if it may have been cheaper I paid $22 for a quart can a primer/sealer. I was just inquiring about the price difference that's all but then again I'd have to worry with shipping so it's probably cheaper to buy it locally. That makes sense anyway, you have a great day.
Thank you very much,
Stephen Anderson

Please note that dimensions may vary +/- 1/4" as we strive to deliver a smooth carving block with minimal imperfections.

Looking for a longer length or something a bit different? Browse our Carving Blanks & Blocks page or email us to find out what else we may be able to offer!

Colour and Workability

Colour and Workability

Sometimes referred to as “White Walnut”, this species provides carvers with a great “in-between” wood darker than basswood or balsa wood, but lighter and softer than walnut. Butternut boasts a distinct grain pattern of a darker hue than the surrounding heartwood, although the pattern of the grain is typically straight and easy to work with. This wood is delightfully soft, making it ideal for hand carving with great detail!
