Appearance

Katalox heartwood is dark reddish brown to nearly black, sometimes with a strong purple hue. Sapwood is pale yellowish white. Pieces with curly or wavy grain are not uncommon.

Workability

Katalox is typically considered difficult to work because of its high density. The wood has a moderate to high blunting effect on cutters. Can be troublesome to glue because of its high density and natural oils present.

Uses

Inlays, fine furniture and cabinetry, parquet flooring, guitars, turnings, and other small specialty items.

Additional Comments

Katalox has exceptional strength properties, and is among the very stiffest and strongest woods available worldwide. Its dark color makes it a popular substitute for ebony.

Why choose Katalox Wood?

Katalox is one of the heaviest and hardest woods in the world and it shows the moment you pick up a board. It has a deep reddish brown to nearly black color with a fine grain and a natural luster that gives it an almost polished look straight off the saw. That darkness and density make it a striking choice for knife handles, pens, and small decorative items where you want something that feels and looks like it was built to last forever. It is also used for flooring and furniture accents where that near black color adds a level of drama and contrast that very few woods can deliver. Katalox is not easy to work with and it will wear down your tools quickly, but it takes a finish beautifully and the end result speaks for itself.
